Construction of the underlying Arsenal began in the 13th century, with the theatre addition commissioned in 1612 by Prince Pietro Semitecolo. It was designed to replace a previous facility destroyed during Ottoman raids. The venue served as a neutral social ground during a period of intense class conflict between commoners and aristocrats on the island.

Visitors can tour the interior boxes and the stage area to observe the preserved 1819 stage scenery, which is one of the few remaining examples of its kind in Europe. A persistent local legend claims that the acoustics were specifically engineered so that even a whisper on stage could be heard clearly in the furthest box, a feat attributed to the specific curvature of the wooden ceiling.
